Topic - Leading Beautifully: Educational leadership as connoisseurship
“Leading Beautifully” is a new metaphor for appraising the work of educational leaders. It is based on research conducted in Australia and America over
three years by Lisa Ehrich and Fenwick English. The data gathered for the research was based primarily on interviews with artists and educational leaders.
In this presentation, Lisa Ehrich will report on the findings of the research published in “Leading Beautifully”. She will present an argument for a new perspective to examine the work of educational leaders which is centred in the arts. Her advocacy represents a quest for an alternative view of leading which is neither mechanistic nor based on for-profit business models which are so dominant in educational policy and practice today. The key to successful leading is to envision it as a form of connoisseurship and the acquisition of “the discerning eye.” One result is that “effective leadership” is minimalist while “leading beautifully” has no ceiling for performance.
